Certification Description

QMED – Oiler-Motor Vessels (Limited). The Oiler lubricates moving parts such as gears, shafts, and bearings of engines and auxiliary equipment. Makes scheduled rounds to observe temperature, pressure, oil level, and condition of equipment, and records data in engineering log. Duties include tending pumps, maintaining evaporators, and monitoring operation of automatically controlled boilers. Assists in transferring oil and water, and may assist in maintenance and repairs in engine room, machine shop, shaft alley, and related spaces. An oiler’s duties consist mainly of keeping machinery lubricated. As a member of the engineering department, the oiler operates and maintains the propulsion and other systems onboard the vessel. Applicants for QMED are required to pass a QMED General Knowledge Examination and the Oiler-Motor Vessels (Limited) rating examination.Any applicant who successfully completed a 120-Hour QMED Oiler Motor Vessels (Limited) course will satisfy the requirements of 46 CFR 12.15-7(b)(2) and will receive 60 days sea service credit that may be applied for a QMED Oiler endorsement provided they also present evidence of at least 120 days engine room service; AND if presented within one year of the completion of training, satisfy the requirements of 46 CFR 12.15-9 for the Oiler examination modules.
